**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been somewhat shy and introverted, diving into this experience was far from comfortable for me. Yet, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period brimming with personal development, hurdles, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating elements of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely a concern on your mind too. On my first day settling into my accommodation, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can affirm that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I could ever wish for. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by simple conversations with individuals sharing similar experiences.

What became apparent to me? I realized that seizing opportunities early in the year is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, fear not! Numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to socialize await you. Above all, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a wide array of diverse individuals in the course and university, you are destined to encounter those who connect with you.

### Managing the Workload

Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the intricacy of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable shift from A-level studies, with an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel overburdened or question your capabilities when observing others engaged in their studies, making you feel as though you’re falling behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same path. If you find something perplexing, the chances are that others do too.

The most crucial lesson I grasped in my inaugural year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for support. This straightforward action can significantly alter your experience.

### The Value of Support

On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and understand the challenges we encounter. They empathize with us while fostering open lines of communication throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until near the end of the year, and I regret not embracing it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took an initiative and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff more intimately, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to establish rapport with faculty, and pursuing this could be one of the best decisions you make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Fully leverage the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Reflections

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely exaggerated. With the vast array of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. More significantly, I discovered how to savor my time, despite the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
