**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and private, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I realize it has been a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this could be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in student accommodation, where I found myself retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships of my life.
The essential lesson? Take that courageous step early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and avenues to meet new people. Most crucially, be authentic—Imperial hosts a varied community, and you’re sure to encounter peers who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was evident, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated, particularly when you observe others studying and begin to question your own capabilities.
What benefited me the most was the realization that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were as well. The best guidance I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Help
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and are always willing to discuss any obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I had before beginning university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, and I’ve learned I’m never truly isolated. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand how to balance academic pressures with enjoyment, even during challenging periods like exams and deadlines.
To anyone about to embark on their university adventure—embrace the journey, take risks, and remember that help is always within reach. You’ve got this!
