**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, uncertainty, and anxiety about what was coming my way. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been quite introverted, transitioning to this new setting felt overwhelming. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what’s my position today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

A significant challenge I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be a top concern for you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted by meeting new people that I spent the day holed up in my room, evading social interactions. However, looking at where I am now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who felt the same way. My crucial lesson? Take that leap early on. If you feel uncertain, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find peers who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-level studies, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. At times, witnessing others studying so adeptly led me to question my own capabilities.

What helped me persevere was coming to the realization that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If you struggle with something, it’s likely that many others are in the same boat. The best action you can take is to seek help—whether from fellow students or instructors. Developing the skill to ask for support is one of the most beneficial lessons you can learn in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A standout aspect of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are always willing to discuss the challenges we encounter. They relate to our difficulties and maintain regular communication throughout the year.

While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it earlier. At the beginning, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge solid connections with staff—an experience I found immensely rewarding. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My suggestion? Maximize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before starting university was mostly unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you face any adversities. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. Despite the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my university experience and make the most of my time here.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, embrace the obstacles, seek assistance when required, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey—it’s one you’ll cherish forever!
