**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted and reserved, the thought of immersing myself in this new venture felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what lessons have I gathered, and what’s my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the foremost hurdles I encountered at the start was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day at student housing, I was so daunted that I ended up spending the entire day alone in my room, far too anxious to approach anyone. However, fast forward to the present day, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

What was the main insight I gained? Take that step. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university academic work was yet another significant obstacle. The increase in workload was dramatic, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. At times, I experienced self-doubt, especially upon observing others studying and feeling as though I was lagging behind.

What aided me through this phase? Reminding myself that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that others were too. The best choice I made was to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning the importance of seeking help is one of the most essential skills to acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most delightful surprises of my inaugural year was the incredible support from the Materials Science department staff. They sincerely desire students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I only wish I had done it sooner.

At the onset, I took a step forward by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with instructors, and doing so can enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that is at your disposal—you can never have too much help.

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I harbored before commencing university were unwarranted. With adequate support from faculty and peers, obstacles become far more surmountable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and it is within reach to relish university life, even amid the rigors of exams and deadlines.

If you are on the brink of starting your university adventure, embrace the journey, take the plunge, and remember—you can handle this!
