**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been inherently shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase of my life was daunting. Yet, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a major issue for you too. I recall my first day in student housing, where I found myself retreating to my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking toward today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with those facing similar situations. My most important lesson? Jump in early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is home to a diverse range of individuals, and you will undoubtedly encounter others who resonate with your interests and core values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and seemingly grasping the concepts with ease.
What aided me through this phase was the realization that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Significance of Faculty Support
In terms of support, the staff in the Materials Science and Engineering department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, making sure our concerns were addressed.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support resources until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be immensely helpful. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I reflect on this past year, it has become clear that the anxiety I felt before starting university was mostly unwarranted. There are ample support structures in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still relishing my time here.
If you are about to embark on your university journey, understand that challenges will arise, but so will remarkable opportunities for personal growth. Embrace the leap, request assistance when necessary, and, above all, savor the experience!
