**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. As a fresh first-year student preparing to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), stepping beyond my comfort zone was unfamiliar territory. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time rich in personal development, obstacles faced, and numerous delightful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be among your top concerns as well. I recall my first day of moving into my accommodation—I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has come to feel like a second family to me, and all it required was engaging in a little small talk with fellow students in similar situations.

So, what have I taken away from this experience? That first step is always worthwhile. If you’re hesitant, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people await. Most importantly, embrace your authentic self. With such a diverse community, you’re sure to encounter others who share your interests.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more daunting. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you see peers studying rigorously. However, I came to realize that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, there’s a good chance others feel the same—so don’t hesitate to seek assistance.

This is arguably the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year: never shy away from asking for help. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for support can profoundly impact your academic experience.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the standout elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from the faculty. They genuinely care about student success and are receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support resources at your disposal—there’s never too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has revealed that many of the anxieties I held prior to starting university were unfounded. With the extensive support system of faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to navigate academic stresses while also enjoying my time, and I have grown in unexpected ways.

For anyone preparing to begin their university adventure—welcome the challenges, seek assistance, and most importantly, savor the experience!
