**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, uncertainty, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been rather timid and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, in retrospect, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are you might feel similarly. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, far too anxious to approach others. However, as I reflect today, I can assert that I’ve formed some truly wonderful friendships.
Imperial has evolved into a second home for me, and it simply required stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in similar situations. My key takeaway? Dive in early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to bond with peers. Most importantly, remain authentic—Imperial is home to a wide array of individuals, and you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more taxing. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when you witness others studying fervently.
What aided me during this time was realizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re finding it hard to grasp concepts, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential thing is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
A standout feature of studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial is the exceptional support from the faculty. They sincerely wish for student success and are always receptive to input. Throughout the year, they ensured ongoing communication with us, addressing our issues and offering direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s start, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and fostering these relationships can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to help navigate any obstacles. Above all, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. Despite the stresses of tests and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time at Imperial and maximize this extraordinary experience.
For anyone getting ready to begin their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and allow yourself to evolve. You’ll be astonished at how much you can achieve in just one year.
