**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation regarding what was to come. I was set to embark on my inaugural year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, entering into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize that this past year has been one of personal growth, challenges, and remarkable memories. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

A significant obstacle I encountered at the start was the challenge of establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a top concern for you. I vividly recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I felt so intimidated that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, initiated through brief chats with those who were facing similar circumstances.

The vital lesson I took away? Embrace the chance to connect at the beginning of the year. Even if it feels daunting, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and situations to meet peers. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you will undoubtedly meet those who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the considerable workload and the heightened complexity of university-level studies. The leap from A-levels was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly tough. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study, but I uncovered a crucial truth: everyone shares similar struggles.

If a concept is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are finding it challenging too. The most constructive action you can take is to reach out for assistance—whether it be from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is one of the most invaluable skills you can hone during your first year.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most comforting elements of my course has been the outstanding support from the faculty. They are truly invested in students’ success and are always receptive to feedback and discussions concerning academic challenges.

Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I took a risk by becoming a year wellbeing representative, which enabled me to connect with faculty members. Establishing rapport with lecturers and support staff is immensely rewarding, and there are numerous avenues to accomplish this. My greatest realization? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was mostly unfounded. There are myriad support systems available, from faculty to fellow classmates, to help you acclimate to the change. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never alone on this journey. Despite the stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to appreciate my university life, and I wouldn’t exchange it for anything.

If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, embrace the challenges, seek support whenever needed, and above all—savor the experience!
