**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was coming my way. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating elements of entering university was the task of establishing new friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might be a major concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent the entirety of that day concealed in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself.

Zoom forward to the present day, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here feel akin to a second family. All it required was a sprinkle of casual conversation with others who were in a similar situation.

So, what insights have I gained? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be abundant icebreaker events and occasions to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re bound to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was notable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more profound. It’s simple to feel swamped and question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and assuming they have everything under control.

What aided me in persevering was the understanding that everyone navigates similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing the same issues. The best course of action is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. Learning to seek help is one of the most invaluable competencies you can cultivate in your first year.

### Engaging with Faculty Members

One of the most commendable aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the encouraging teaching staff. They truly wish for students to thrive and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us and offered crucial support.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I’d embraced it sooner. One proactive step I did take early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to bond with faculty members, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with teaching staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant insight? Utilize the support that is accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the fears and worries I experienced prior to commencing university were largely unfounded. There exists a multitude of support systems, ranging from staff to fellow students, to assist you through this journey. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone. Even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to find joy and maximize my university experience.

For anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: welcome the challenges, pursue support when necessary, and seize each opportunity for growth. You will be astonished by what you can accomplish in just one year.
