**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and fears regarding what awaited me. I was on the cusp of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been a shy and introverted person, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize I’ve experienced a year full of personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my status today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you are a future student, this might resonate as one of your primary worries as well. On my first day at the student residence, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, unable to muster the courage to introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all started with pushing myself out of my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

The major takeaway? Dive in early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be many social activities and chances to meet new faces. Above all, remain authentic—Imperial has a rich diversity of individuals, and you’re sure to find friends who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another key challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level studies. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more challenging. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I noticed others studying hard while I felt like I was lagging behind.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone else was navigating similar struggles. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that others were as well. One of the most crucial lessons I learned was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Being willing to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the tremendous support from the faculty. The staff genuinely cares about student success and welcomes feedback with open arms. They are aware of the challenges we encounter and take initiative in addressing them.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done it sooner. Early on, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to foster connections with staff members. This experience turned out to be incredibly rewarding. There are numerous ways to reach out to faculty, and doing so can dramatically enrich your university experience. My prime takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal; you can never receive too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. There are plentiful support systems established, ranging from faculty to fellow students, that can ease your transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never completely alone and that enjoying university life amidst the demands of exams and deadlines is entirely feasible.

If you are preparing to embark on your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: face the challenges head-on, reach out for support when necessary, and permit yourself to grow. You may just astonish yourself with what you can accomplish.
