### My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was set to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Entering this unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this might also be on your mind. On my initial day in student housing, just before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a little casual conversation with others who were feeling just as I was.

So, what did I glean from this? First and foremost, taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel ready, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Secondly, just be authentic. With a diverse student body, it’s certain you’ll encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. It’s simple to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and appearing more self-assured.

What assisted me was keeping in mind that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with comprehension, chances are others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Developing the ability to ask for support is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from Staff and Well-being Resources

One aspect that particularly impressed me was the level of support provided by the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and grasp the hurdles we encounter. They maintain transparent communication throughout the academic year and actively respond to student feedback.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I embraced the chance to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and support staff can greatly enhance your experience, and there are several avenues to do so. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources available—you can never have too much support.

### Final Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before entering university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.

If you’re about to commence your first year, embrace the experience, take those leaps, and remember—you are never alone on this path.
