**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced a swirl of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, entering this fresh environment felt daunting. However, reflecting on the year, I realize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary concerns. I recall my first day in student housing—I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

What have I discovered? Taking that initial step is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, just be yourself—Imperial is home to a variety of people, and you’re sure to find friends with similar interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was another challenge. The workload was rigorous, and the complexity escalated notably, particularly during the second term. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others studying and feeling like I was lagging behind.

What assisted me throughout this? Understanding that everyone shared similar struggles. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others did as well. The essential step was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Seeking help is one of the most important abilities to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the greatest aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the exceptional support from faculty. They genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to feedback and conversations. Though I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form valuable connections with faculty members. There are numerous ways to interact with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. With the appropriate backing from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I also learned to balance academic pressures with enjoyment, maximizing my university experience.

If you’re on the verge of starting your journey at Imperial, understand that challenges will arise, but so will chances for growth and relationships. Take that first move, ask for support when necessary, and fully engage with the experience—you won’t regret it.
