### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into this new venture felt daunting. However, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been one of personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern for you. On my first day in my student residence, just before the semester kicked off, I remained in my room all day, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, here I am today, able to assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Imperial has become like a second home, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. My key lesson? Embrace that initial boldness at the year’s start. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and avenues to connect with others. Most of all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your perspective.

#### Navigating the Academic Demands

Adjusting to the academic rigor and the heightened complexity of the curriculum was another significant obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by equally diligent peers.

What assisted me the most was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are facing the same difficulties. The most effective course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to seek out support is one of the most crucial skills to acquire during your initial year.

#### The Significance of Finding Support

When it comes to support, the teaching staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are welcoming to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication and displayed a profound awareness of our challenges.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support system until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. My most significant takeaway? Never hesitate to make use of the support accessible to you—you can never have excessive assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I held before entering university were largely baseless. With the adequate support from faculty and fellow students, those concerns became manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never entirely alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic obligations while enjoying university life.

For anyone about to start their own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, ask for assistance when necessary, and fully engage in the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before you realize it, you’ll be reflecting on a remarkable first year—just as I am now.
