**Insights from My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and worries about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having been a shy and introverted person in the past, diving into this new journey was daunting. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered was the task of meeting new people. If you’re considering enrolling, this might resonate with you too. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I remember isolated in my room all day, feeling too anxious to go outside and introduce myself. Yet, as I sit here now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships of my life.
Imperial has truly become my second home, thanks to a bit of casual conversation with individuals sharing similar experiences. The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to take that plunge at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you meet others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another pivotal challenge was acclimating to the academic rigors and expectations. The transition from A-levels to university studies was considerable, and moving from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s natural to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others studying intensely.
What propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the skill of reaching out for help is one of the most essential abilities you can acquire in your initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in touch with us regularly, ensuring our voices were heard.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, I wish I had acted on it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Fully leverage the available support—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I realize that many of the concerns I had before starting university were quite unfounded. Abundant support exists, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered I’m never truly alone, and it’s achievable to juggle academic demands while enjoying a vibrant social life.
For anyone on the cusp of beginning their university experience, my guidance is straightforward: immerse yourself in the journey, seek help when necessary, and above all, stay true to yourself.
