### Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown felt intimidating, particularly for someone who had always been somewhat shy. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships
Making friends was one of the most significant obstacles I encountered. If you are a future student, this might be one of your primary worries too. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to venture outside. Nevertheless, fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The main lesson? Take the plunge. Even if you feel uncertain at the start, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others await you. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student population, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals who will become your network of support.
#### Adjusting to Academic Rigors
The shift from A-level studies to university coursework presented another significant challenge. The demands of the workload were considerably greater, and the difficulty escalated even more between the first and second terms. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your skills when you witness others engrossed in intense study sessions.
What propelled me through was the understanding that everyone is grappling with similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling with a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching staff. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
#### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most reassuring facets of my program has been the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They genuinely wish to see students succeed and are consistently receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had earlier.
In the beginning, I ventured out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be remarkably beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with professors, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic journey. My most valuable advice? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never receive too much help.
#### Insights Gained from My First Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the fears and apprehensions I harbored before starting university were largely unwarranted. An abundance of support exists from both faculty and fellow students, and no one encounters their challenges in isolation. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to juggle academic demands with personal enjoyment, maximizing my university experience despite the inevitable trials.
If you are about to commence your own university expedition, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal. But also remember that, with time, support, and a willingness to venture beyond your comfort zone, you’ll find your niche—just as I did.
