**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was feeling anxious, unsure, and apprehensive about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite timid and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the term began, I isolated myself in my room all day, too frightened to step outside and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships—individuals who feel like an extended family.
What valuable lesson did I take away? Taking that initial plunge is always worthwhile. If you find yourself feeling hesitant, don’t fret—there will be countless social gatherings and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic requirements. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying diligently and believed I was falling behind.
What assisted me in overcoming this? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone. If I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from peers or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Staff Support
One of the most rewarding elements of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the fantastic support from the teaching staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral care until later in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it sooner.
At the onset of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a student well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are plenty of avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that many of my initial concerns were unfounded. Thanks to the support from faculty and fellow students, I managed to navigate challenges and flourish both academically and personally. Most importantly, I discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment.
If you are on the verge of starting university, remember that you are not alone. Embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and take full advantage of the opportunities that present themselves. It’s a journey of development, and it’s one that is truly rewarding.
