**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what awaited me. I was set to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the greatest challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to meet anyone. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.

I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief chats with others in similar circumstances. My key takeaway? Take the plunge at the start of the year. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be authentic—Imperial is filled with a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your passions.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-level studies to university was notable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated when you observe others studying and begin to question your own competencies.

What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, others are likely facing the same difficulties. The most effective step you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or your lecturers. Learning to reach out for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff and Pastoral Support

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the exceptional backing from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely aspire for student success and recognize the hurdles we encounter. They foster open dialogue throughout the year and are consistently ready to provide support.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until later on in the year, I wish I had embraced them earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me establish connections with staff members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely beneficial, and there are numerous ways to connect with them. My suggestion? Leverage all available assistance—you can never have too much support!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was unwarranted. There are abundant support mechanisms in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, so no one has to navigate this journey in solitude. More importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.

If you’re about to embark on your own adventure at Imperial, understand that challenges will arise, but so will personal growth, friendships, and unforgettable moments. Take the leap, reach out for assistance when necessary, and above all—enjoy the journey!
