**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and exhilaration as I readied myself to begin my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. Having been shy and reticent in the past, taking the plunge into this new endeavor seemed intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my status today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A primary difficulty I encountered initially was the challenge of meeting new individuals. If you are an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can sincerely state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has truly become a second home, all beginning with brief exchanges with others who shared my apprehensions. My key takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you feel reluctant, there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage socially. Most importantly, be your authentic self—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse personalities, and you’ll find your community.
### Adapting to the Academic Rigor
The shift from A-levels to university-level study posed another substantial challenge. The academic load was heavy, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be especially grueling. At times, I questioned my abilities, particularly when I observed others studying and felt like I was falling behind.
What kept me going was the understanding that everyone encounters difficulties at various points. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most beneficial thing you can do is seek assistance—whether from classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your freshman year.
### The Significance of Requesting Assistance
Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication, addressing our issues and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. A pivotal decision I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with your professors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has taught me that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.
If you are about to commence your university adventure, embrace the obstacles, reach out for support when necessary, and seize every opportunity. It’s a life-changing journey, and you will emerge stronger on the other end.
