**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I find myself contemplating the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your major anxieties as well. On the very first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a family.

So, what shifted? It all began with small efforts, like engaging in light conversations with others who were equally apprehensive. I discovered that taking that first step toward connection early on is essential. Even if you’re not feeling up to it, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most significantly, I learned that being your authentic self is the most effective strategy. With such a vibrant and diverse community at Imperial, you will surely find people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was particularly intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe peers studying fervently and worry that you might be lagging behind.

What aided me immensely was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find yourself confused about a topic, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The key is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to request help may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the Materials Science faculty at Imperial are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about the success of their students and understand the hurdles we confront. Throughout the academic year, they maintained transparent communication with us and attentively addressed our inquiries.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year was almost over, and I wish I had leveraged it sooner. One of the initiatives I embraced early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson here is to make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressure of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a pathway of growth, self-exploration, and connection. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, remain true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ve got this!
