**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, diving into this new experience was a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve developed and how much I’ve accomplished. So, what insights has this year provided me with, and how do I perceive my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I faced was initiating friendships. Entering university can feel daunting, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my residence, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve connected with—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. It all commenced with small actions, such as striking up light conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

What did I come to understand? Taking that bold step at the beginning of the year is worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Trials
Another major challenge was adapting to the course load and the complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when you notice others engrossed in study and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me through this was realizing that everyone shares this experience. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are facing similar struggles. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to master in your first year.

### Encouragement from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors are genuinely invested in the success of their students and show understanding towards the struggles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing any concerns we present.

I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the onset of the year, I took a courageous step by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With a broad spectrum of support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and laughter.

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve evolved, not only academically but also on a personal level. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal. Take those bold steps, embrace the hurdles, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You might be amazed at what you can accomplish.
