**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I was set to embark on my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown was well outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on a year of academic development, obstacles, and excitement, I can recognize how truly transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was the notion of making new friends. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my very first day in the student dorms, mere days before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can state with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like family to me. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and starting simple conversations with others who were equally as apprehensive.

What lesson have I taken from this? Initially, taking that crucial leap at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared to do so immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Additionally, the best version of yourself is what you should present to the world. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the demands of the coursework and the intricacy of the subject matter was yet another major challenge. The shift from A-level studies to university was a considerable leap, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become inundated or doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing peers studying and assuming they have everything under control.

Aiding me during these times was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same seas. If you find yourself perplexed by something, there’s a good chance others are too. The secret lies in asking for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to seek guidance may be one of the most valuable skills you cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly care about students’ success and show empathy towards the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and were always accessible to address our queries.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was an important decision I made early on, and it turned out to be incredibly fulfilling. It provided me the chance to forge connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and I highly recommend seizing these chances. The support they provide can profoundly influence your experience.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during my time at university—was often misplaced. The broad array of support avenues available, from faculty to fellow students, has shown me that I am never alone in facing difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and achievement.

As I continue my journey, I am thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve fostered. To anyone poised to begin their university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: take that plunge, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to ask for help whenever you need it.
