**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging headlong into such a fresh and demanding environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my first day in student housing, a few days ahead of the term officially starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—connections that feel akin to a second family.
What facilitated this progress? It began with little steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing the same situation. I learned that taking early risks is essential. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and events to assist in your connections with others. Above all, I discovered that authenticity is the most effective strategy. With the vast array of diverse individuals at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of university-level material was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you are doing enough.
What sustained me during these times was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re having difficulties grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential factor is reaching out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most important lesson I gained from my first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department are phenomenal. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Make the most of the resources and assistance available—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was frequently unwarranted. There are abundant support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate various challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own and that it’s feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of pleasure and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative expedition, and I’m eager to discover what the next chapter shall bring.
