### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, the idea of stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Reflecting on this past year now, I see a period marked by personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may resonate with those feelings. On my first day in student housing, just a few days ahead of the term’s start, I found myself isolating in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet people. Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to say that I’ve cultivated some of the most significant friendships of my life.
I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with brief exchanges with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. What did I learn from this experience? It’s vital to take that first leap of courage. If stepping out of your comfort zone feels daunting right away, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker opportunities and events to help you connect with others. Above all, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
#### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first term to the second was notably more intense. It’s common to feel inundated or doubt your abilities when surrounded by such capable peers.
What assisted me during these times was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, others likely are too. The crucial takeaway is to ask for assistance—whether that’s from classmates or faculty. This is arguably the most important lesson I grasped in my first year: don’t be afraid to seek help.
#### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for student success and are considerate of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took the plunge and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources and support that are at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Insights Gained
This past year has shown me that much of the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was often misplaced. With the plethora of support options available—from staff to fellow students—help is always accessible when needed. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I take pride in the progress I’ve made. From overcoming my early fears to embracing the complexities of university life, this year has been a transformative journey. If you are on the verge of starting your own adventure, remember to take that leap, be your true self, and make the most of the support surrounding you.
