**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into uncharted territory appeared overwhelming. Now, as I contemplate an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I can’t help but be astounded by all that I’ve absorbed and my current position.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this becomes a significant source of stress, and I was no different. On my inaugural day at the student residence, merely days ahead of classes commencing, I found myself sequestered in my room all day, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Looking to the present, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most profound friendships I’ve ever experienced. These relationships have evolved into my second family, both within my program and across the university. All it required was for me to step outside my comfort zone and initiate small talks with individuals who were similarly inclined.

So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared to plunge in immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I uncovered the importance of being authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, there is no doubt you’ll connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the demanding curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when among exceptionally accomplished peers.

What assisted me in managing this was recognizing that everyone was confronting similar difficulties. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely others were too. The vital lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, asking for support is one of the most valuable skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative at the beginning of the year was one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway from this? Make the most of the resources and support networks available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university, as well as throughout my time here, was frequently baseless. With a plethora of support avenues available—from faculty to fellow students—there’s always someone there to assist. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I gear up for the next phase of my university journey, I’m thankful for the growth, challenges, and relationships that have shaped my first year. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and remember to savor the journey.
