**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and mild-mannered, stepping into the unfamiliar was a daunting challenge. Now, as I reflect on a year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can recognize how much I’ve discovered and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into accommodation, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These relationships didn’t materialize instantly, but rather started with small interactions—like engaging in light conversation with others who felt just as apprehensive as I did. Gradually, these bonds evolved into a second family during my time at Imperial. What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step to connect with others is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will always be icebreaker events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Transition
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more formidable. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities, especially when observing others who appear to be flourishing.
What aided me in managing these sentiments was the realization that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This became perhaps the most significant lesson I grasped in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
### The Significance of Support and Connection
In terms of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire our success and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open with us and were always ready to hear our concerns.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I often regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I made a move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My foremost takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I realize that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and fun.
This year has been a voyage of self-exploration, development, and connection. If you’re preparing to embark on your own university journey, remember that although the obstacles may seem intimidating, they are opportunities for personal growth. Take that leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and most importantly, savor the experience.
