**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of nervous excitement, doubt, and uncertainty as I set out to embark on my first-year academic journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat reserved, plunging into this new phase felt vastly outside my comfort zone. Now that I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable moments, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I am thrilled to announce that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantaneously, but they began with minor steps—casual chats with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into significant connections. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all thanks to that first leap of faith.

So, what’s the moral? Don’t hesitate to put yourself out there, even if it feels awkward initially. If you’re not prepared to engage right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant obstacle was adapting to the new level of workload and complexity in the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing peers studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in managing this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to request support is one of the most valuable skills you can obtain during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of assistance, the team in the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we face. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. Playing the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I took early on, and it ultimately proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which has been incredibly valuable.

My recommendation? Make the most of the support structures available. Whether it’s academic assistance, emotional support, or simply mingling with your lecturers, these resources exist to facilitate your success. You can never have an excess of support!

### Insights Gained

As I look back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

I’ve also discovered how to reconcile the unavoidable stress of examinations and deadlines while still enjoying myself and maximizing my university experience. It’s been a period of personal development, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead.

If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous. Take it one step at a time, seize the opportunities that present themselves, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’re capable of handling this!
