**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Masters in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my upcoming path. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and quiet individual, plunging into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and cherished experiences. What insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is often a primary concern when beginning university, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of my closest friendships here. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me at Imperial. What catalyzed this change? It all commenced with casual conversations and engaging with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

The main takeaway? Take the initiative early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others will be available. And perhaps most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover peers who align with your values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the elevated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by classmates who seem to excel effortlessly.

What assisted me in maneuvering through this? First, I reminded myself that everyone was grappling with similar issues. If I was struggling to comprehend a topic, it was likely that others were too. The most crucial lesson I adopted was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Reaching out for help is not a weakness; it’s an essential skill to cultivate in your early university days.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication, addressing our concerns and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of my better choices. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether via formal positions or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your own experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—there’s never a surplus of help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my inaugural year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and during the year—was often unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated.

This year has imparted lessons on balancing the pressure from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and merriment. It has illustrated the significance of stepping outside my comfort zone, embracing challenges, and relying on the community surrounding me.

As I anticipate the next phase of my university experience, I feel more self-assured and enthusiastic than ever.
