**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was not something I was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I realize it was a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what exactly did I take away from it, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the biggest challenges I faced was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, chances are you may experience the same worries. On my first day in student housing, just before classes started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was venturing out of my comfort zone and engaging in small talk with those in similar situations.
So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that making that first move at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not immediately ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied group of students across the program and university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can sometimes challenge your self-esteem. You may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. However, here’s what helped me: remembering that everyone else is on the same journey. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are facing the same struggle. Therefore, don’t shy away from seeking assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year—reach out to your peers and the academic staff for help!
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the teaching team in the Materials department is fantastic. They truly want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They keep communication open with us throughout the year and are always willing to address our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty better, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and making these connections is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to take full advantage of the support offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. There are so many support systems available, ranging from staff to fellow students, that can alleviate those concerns. I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy my life while managing the unavoidable stress of examinations and deadlines.
