**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how transformative it has been. But what exactly did I gain, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can be stressful, and for prospective students, this might be among your greatest worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can honestly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with small steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally nervous. What I’ve come to realize is that taking that first courageous step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous chances to connect with others will arise through icebreaker sessions and social events. Most crucially, I learned that being your authentic self is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe peers seemingly handling everything effortlessly.
What aided me the most was recognizing that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was facing similar hurdles, and if I struggled with something, it was likely others were too. The essential lesson here? Seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Fostering Relationships with Staff
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and providing direction.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Nevertheless, one bold step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support structures available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, there’s always a path to surmount difficulties. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely isolated, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I look ahead, I’m appreciative of the growth I’ve achieved and the connections I’ve fostered. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: take that leap, face the challenges head-on, and remember to be genuine.
