**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you’re exploring this as a potential student, it may also be a source of worry for you. On my first day settling into accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly affirm that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who truly feel like a second family here at Imperial.
So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that making a bold move at the start of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t initially feel ready or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to interact with individuals in similar situations. Above all, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence—you may observe others studying and begin to feel inadequate. However, here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar circumstances. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This has become the most valuable lesson I learned in my first year. Do not shy away from reaching out to your classmates and the faculty when you require aid.
### The Significance of Staff Support
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to flourish and appreciate the challenges that students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year to address any concerns we might face. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway here is to make the most of the support that is accessible to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehensive feelings I experienced—both prior to and during my time at university—were frequently unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from faculty and fellow students, these worries can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
