**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, as I look back on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and happiness, I can recognize how much I’ve grown and what I’ve achieved.

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. Beginning university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share that concern. On my first day in student housing, I found myself spending hours isolated in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The secret? Making that initial move. Even if you’re not ready immediately, there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. I discovered that being authentic is the most effective strategy—Imperial boasts such a diverse community that you’re destined to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-level studies to university standard coursework proved demanding, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more stark. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you witness others appearing to thrive.

What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, others likely are too. The most crucial lesson I garnered during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Requesting help is not a weakness; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your education.

### The Encouraging Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely wish for students to succeed and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the difficulties students encounter and are proactive in their solutions.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Accepting the position of a well-being representative for my year was among the best choices I made. It allowed me to forge relationships with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the faculty is something I wholeheartedly advise. They are there to assist, so utilize the resources and support they provide—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before starting university was mainly unwarranted. With the backing of peers, faculty, and the broader Imperial community, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly isolated. More significantly, I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of fun and enjoyment.

To anyone on the brink of starting their own university experience: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember that support is always at hand. You will evolve in ways you never thought possible.
