**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty regarding the future. As a first-year student set to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering a world that was completely new. Having always been a quiet and shy individual, immersing myself in this novel experience felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I now see a journey filled with development, obstacles, and numerous delightful experiences. But what have I taken away from it, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the prospect of building friendships. If you’re a potential student who’s come across this, you might resonate with that fear. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like an extended family.
So, what insights have I gathered? Firstly, taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people await you. Secondly, the most beneficial approach is simply to be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the elevated complexity of the subject matter. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to feel engulfed or question your capabilities when witnessing others studying with great intensity. Nonetheless, one of the crucial realizations I encountered was that we’re all experiencing similar situations. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.
The vital message? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, obtaining support is crucial. Learning to reach out for help from the onset can significantly enhance your academic journey.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my first year was the exceptional assistance offered by the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about students’ success and are always approachable regarding any concerns. They recognize the challenges faced by students and maintain transparent communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral care until later on, I wish I had been more proactive. Serving as a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Don’t miss out on the support at your disposal—there’s never too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my early fears were unfounded. The anxiety I experienced before and during the year was alleviated by the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible, even amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
If you’re on the cusp of beginning your university adventure, be aware that challenges will arise, but so will chances for growth, friendships, and achievements. Take the plunge, don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed, and most importantly, embrace your true self.
