**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the vibrant world of university life seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal growth, challenges, and heaps of enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve traveled.
### Confronting the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entirety of that day confined to my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships of my life.
What was the secret? Taking that essential first step. Striking up conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings became my initial move toward creating a second family at Imperial. If you’re apprehensive about connecting with others, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to interact with fellow students. The crucial lesson I learned? Embrace your true self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was particularly demanding. At times, it was easy to feel inundated or question my capabilities, especially when making comparisons to my peers.
What propelled me forward was recognizing that I wasn’t the only one facing these obstacles—everyone was working through similar issues. If there was something I didn’t grasp, it’s likely that others were struggling as well. The best piece of advice I can share is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, reaching out for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Encouragement from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. In the beginning, I took a leap of faith by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to establish rapport with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have excessive assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has imparted numerous lessons. I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to strike a balance between the pressure of exams and deadlines while enjoying myself and making the most of my university experience.
Embarking on university can be daunting, but it’s equally a remarkable opportunity for growth, connection, and exploration. If you’re about to commence your own adventure, take that leap—you may just astonish yourself with how far you can go.
