**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I embarked on a path that initially filled me with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. As a first-year student beginning my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was entering unfamiliar territory. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into the unknown was far outside my comfort level. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of personal growth, challenges, and lasting memories. But what insights have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. The beginning of university can seem overwhelming, and if you’re a student-to-be reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I spent a whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all commenced with brief discussions with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what lesson did I glean? I realized that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not quite ready or feeling at ease right away, that’s completely fine—plenty of ice-breaking events and ways to socialize will present themselves. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the optimum strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter like-minded individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Facing Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was a significant transition, and the jump from the first to the second term seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and assuming they’re outperforming you.

What assisted me in navigating these tribulations was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, chances are others are in the same situation. The essential step is to seek assistance—this is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, requesting help can significantly impact your journey.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is genuinely outstanding. The instructors and tutors are sincerely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They maintain accessible communication channels and are always ready to address our inquiries.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support options available until later in the year, I wish I had availed myself of those resources sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I undertook at the year’s onset. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Capitalize on the support systems that are offered to you—you can never have an excess of help!

### Insights Gained
In reviewing this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced before starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unfounded. With the vast array of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year imparted lessons on balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.

In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It has taught me the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, seeking assistance when necessary, and embracing the opportunities that arise. If you’re on the brink of starting your own university adventure, keep in mind: take that plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support at your disposal.
