**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may be feeling the same anxiety. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a supportive second family—friends who encourage and boost my spirits. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others in similar situations. What I learned is this: make that initial effort at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Another key challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and adapting from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you’re measuring up.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s probable that others are too. The essential takeaway is to ask for assistance—this might be the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to fellow students or seeking help from academic staff, don’t shy away from seeking support.

### Fostering Relationships with Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The professors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. They maintain ongoing communication throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing assistance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not having sought it out sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be an excellent decision. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which became incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I strongly suggest making the most of these opportunities. My greatest insight? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—were often unfounded. With the vast array of support available from faculty and fellow students, assistance is always within reach. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the development, friendships, and experiences that have shaped my first year. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, be authentic, and welcome the challenges—you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
