**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Daring to step into the unknown was not an experience my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how much I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this can be one of the most formidable aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be something that concerns you as well. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes began, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was a bit of casual conversation with others who were feeling just as apprehensive.
So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease right away, don’t be concerned—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, I realized that embracing your authentic self is the optimal strategy. With such a diverse group at university, you’re bound to encounter those who have similar interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a demanding academic atmosphere can occasionally undermine your confidence—you may glance around and feel as if everyone else is ahead of you.
What aided me in this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial lesson is to seek help. This might be the most vital insight I gained during my first year. Whether it’s turning to your classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how amazing the Materials department staff are. They truly desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and demonstrated genuine compassion for our challenges.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway here is to leverage the support being provided—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and during the year—was frequently baseless. With the extensive array of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also allowing myself to enjoy the experience, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.
If you’re about to embark on your university journey, recognize that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. But also understand that you’ll encounter plenty of opportunities to evolve, connect, and flourish. Take those risks, ask for help, and above all, be true to yourself.
