**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a shy and introverted person, immersing myself in this new environment was quite a departure from what I was used to. Looking back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyable moments. So, what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current situation?
### Making Connections: The Initial Challenge
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s likely that this is one of your biggest concerns too. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, especially among my course peers.
What did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and chances to connect with individuals in similar situations. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is fundamental. With so many diverse people throughout the university, you will undoubtedly find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Facing the Workload
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a demanding environment can shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you are falling short.
What aided me during this process was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something puzzling, it’s likely others are too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Collaboration and reaching out for help are vital for achieving success.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept us informed of any issues we faced. Even though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I reflect on this year, I realize that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, was often unwarranted. There are myriad support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those feelings. I’ve also come to understand that I am never truly solitary, and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
By facing the challenges head-on and fully utilizing the resources at my disposal, I’ve experienced growth both academically and personally. I look forward to what the next few years will hold!
