**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I view it as a time of tremendous personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was the task of making new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too nervous to step outside and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a few casual conversations with fellow newcomers.

So, what did I take away from this? The essential step is to take that first jump. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and occasions to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied student body across the course and university, you are sure to find peers who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Academic Load

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was clearly a significant leap from A-levels, and an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes shake your self-assurance. It’s easy to glance at peers studying and feel inadequate. But here’s the truth: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something unclear, chances are others are grappling with the same issue.

The crucial lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Don’t hesitate to approach your classmates or instructors when you’re confused. Developing this skill early on is essential.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the staff in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely wish to see you thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering assistance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I regret not taking advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect more with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway from this experience is to fully embrace the support offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before commencing university, and even throughout the year, was largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was able to tackle the challenges and establish my place. I’ve come to realize that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to blend enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
