**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory. However, reflecting on this past academic year, I can appreciate how much I’ve evolved—academically, socially, and personally. This year has been filled with challenges, self-exploration, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing the same apprehensions. I certainly was. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester officially began, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve developed some of the most cherished friendships—friends who have become like family to me.
So, what lesson did I take from this experience? I discovered that making that first move is essential. If you don’t feel ready or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others in similar circumstances. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse array of personalities throughout the course and university, you’re bound to find those who connect with you.
### Academic Challenges: Adjusting to the Workload
Another notable obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even sharper increase between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally shake your self-confidence. You may glance around and feel as if others are more advanced, but believe me—everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others do too.
The most vital takeaway from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, never hesitate to ask for help. Everyone is there to support you, and asking for assistance is a demonstration of strength, not fragility.
### Assistance from the Staff: An Essential Resource
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire for you to excel and are aware of the challenges faced by students. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had utilized it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff on a more personal level, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Thriving
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—were largely misplaced. There are numerous support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the difficulties. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with dealing with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
