**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into such a new and unfamiliar setting was certainly intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can truly appreciate how life-changing this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share the same concern—it’s completely understandable. On my first day in the student housing, just days before the semester officially started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

The pivotal moment arose when I mustered the courage to engage in casual conversations with others who were in a similar situation. That small leap of faith resulted in the creation of a second family at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Make that leap early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. And, most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who align with your vibe.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing my peers appear to flourish. It’s effortless to feel as though you’re lagging, but one essential lesson I learned is that everyone is sharing this journey.

If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential thing is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward act of reaching out can significantly impact your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and were always prepared to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the bold moves I made at the year’s outset, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through official positions or casual chats, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned immensely. The apprehension I felt before entering university, along with the anxiety I faced throughout the year, was often misplaced. With the abundant support available from both faculty and fellow students, I found that I was never genuinely alone.

Above all, I learned how to harmonize the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun. University is a transformative time, and while it comes with challenges, it also offers a chance to embrace new experiences, form enduring friendships, and cultivate resilience.

As I gear up for the next phase of my journey, I am thankful for the lessons I have absorbed and the individuals I have encountered along the way.
