**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, the thought of immersing myself in university life seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of remarkable personal development, challenges, and numerous enjoyable experiences. But what have I learned this year, and where do I currently stand?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. This often ranks as one of the most intimidating elements of entering university, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might share this concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the official term began, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, feeling too anxious to step outside and meet new people.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a few straightforward conversations with others who were in similar situations. What did I discover? I learned that taking that first leap of faith is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease initially, don’t worry—there will be plenty of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being yourself is vital. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with you.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. Being placed in such an intense academic setting can occasionally shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short.

What assisted me in navigating these moments of uncertainty was the awareness that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others are equally puzzled. So, seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year—never hesitate to ask for assistance from fellow students or faculty members.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the obstacles students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year to resolve any issues we may face. Although I didn’t fully use the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I ventured out by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position allowed me to build connections with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to take complete advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the apprehensive feelings I experienced before and during my university journey were largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to balance having a good time with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting on my journey, I take pride in the progress I’ve made, and I eagerly anticipate what the future holds as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
