**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the unknown was quite a daunting undertaking. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and, most importantly, enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re reading this as an incoming student, it’s probably one of your primary worries as well. On my first day of moving into dormitory housing, just days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it demanded was a few exchanges of small talk with others who were feeling just like I was.
So, what did I glean from this? It’s essential to take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if you aren’t feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breakers and activities to facilitate connections with others. And most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse mix of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable increase from A-level studies, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be disheartening, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to understand something, it’s likely that your peers are grappling with it too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the instructors. This is perhaps the most vital takeaway I gained during my first year.
### Assistance from the Staff
Speaking of assistance, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for you to thrive, and they are aware of the challenges students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing any issues we might have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had begun sooner.
At the year’s onset, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself better with the staff, which has been extremely beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My primary takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the support that’s available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
### Final Considerations
Looking back, this year has illustrated to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
