**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted, jumping into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, it has been a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what exactly did I take away from this experience, and where do I stand now?

### The Challenge of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the task of making connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too scared to venture out and meet anyone. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and across the campus.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I understood that taking that first step is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous social events and chances to connect with others who are in the same situation. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With a diverse range of personalities and backgrounds present at university, you will inevitably meet individuals who click with you.

### Facing the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heavy workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was notable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even starker. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when you observe others immersed in their studies. However, I found comfort in the knowledge that everyone shares similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are facing the same hurdle.

The most crucial lesson I acquired in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, don’t hesitate to reach out. Everyone is there to assist you, and developing the skill to ask for help early on is essential.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are well aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered an atmosphere of open dialogue, ensuring any of our concerns were addressed. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a significant step by taking on the role of a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me connect with the faculty more deeply, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to interact with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your experience at university. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources available to you—you can never have too much support!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehensions I felt before and during university were mostly unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never alone in my challenges. Most significantly, I learned how to strike a balance between enjoying my time and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
