**Insights from My Initial Year as a Materials Science and Engineering Student**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was not my forte. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Making Connections: Surmounting the Initial Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was establishing new friendships. For numerous individuals, this is one of the most intimidating elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into accommodations, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and everything began with some casual conversation with those who were in a similar situation. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking that initial step of faith is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Load

Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a prominent transition from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison.

What assisted me during this period was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost guarantee that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson I took from my first year: reach out for help from your peers and the faculty. It’s a vital skill that will benefit you throughout your university journey.

### Assistance from Faculty: An Essential Asset

Speaking of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter hurdles. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering support. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, providing an invaluable experience. There are many avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for your personal growth. My main takeaway from this segment of university experience is to maximize the support available to you. You can never have excessive help!

### Concluding Reflections

In sum, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I encountered before and during university was often unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated and that it is feasible to enjoy university life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
