**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new experience felt incredibly challenging. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and so many unforgettable moments, I recognize how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be feeling concerned about the same issue. I certainly was. On my first day in student accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever known—friends who genuinely feel like family. What changed? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were navigating the same journey as me.

If there’s one important takeaway I’ve gained, it’s this: take that initial leap of faith early on. Regardless of whether you feel prepared, there are plenty of icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. And most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd at university, you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted or question your skills, especially when observing others studying intensely and worrying if you’re lagging behind.

What helped me through these times was the realization that everyone is undergoing a similar experience. If you’re puzzled by something, chances are you’re not alone—others are likely grappling with the same topics. The most crucial skill I honed during my first year was learning to seek help. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for assistance can dramatically change your experience.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently available to address our concerns.

I must confess, I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initiatives I embraced at the year’s start, and it became an invaluable opportunity. It allowed me to forge strong connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely advantageous.

If there’s just one piece of advice I could offer, it’s to appreciate the support systems that are accessible to you. Whether it’s academic guidance or pastoral assistance, you can never have an excess of support.

### Reflections

In retrospect, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and throughout the university experience—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

Above all, I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying myself and maximizing my university experience.

To anyone on the verge of starting their own journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that you’re entering a realm filled with opportunities, support, and extraordinary individuals. Take that leap, seek help when you need it, and don’t overlook the importance of having fun along the way.
