**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown was not something I was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

### Navigating the Challenge of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be among your top worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can comfortably say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was a little small talk with fellow students who were in a similar situation as me.

What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step at the onset of the year is vital. If you’re hesitant or uneasy, that’s perfectly alright! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Expectations
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even greater. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and wondering if you measure up.

What helped me navigate this experience was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The key lies in seeking assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. Learning to request help is arguably the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing encouragement.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had done it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and making these connections can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant lesson? Make full use of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much aid!

### Takeaways from My Experience
This year has imparted to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the diverse array of support options available from both faculty and peers, I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve figured out how to juggle the stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.

Reflecting back, I see how much I’ve evolved, and I’m enthusiastic about what awaits me on my journey at Imperial.
