**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown wasn’t a trait my previously introverted self was familiar with. Now, reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a period of transformation—brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and how do I perceive my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day hidden in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like a second family. It all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared my apprehensions.
What did I discover? Taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you’re hesitant or feel uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet others. Most critically, just be yourself. With a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you will undoubtedly come across those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study and wonder if you measure up.
What assisted me during this time was the awareness that everyone is facing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, likely, others are struggling as well. The crucial aspect is to seek assistance—either from peers or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Care
Speaking of help, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking a leap at the start of the year, I became a well-being representative for my year. This position permitted me to forge connections with faculty, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My main takeaway? Do not hesitate to utilize the available resources and support—you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely alone. This year has imparted how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also realize that you will find your footing, build meaningful relationships, and grow in ways you never envisioned.
