**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been inherently shy and introverted, stepping into uncharted territory felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize a time of significant growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what have I learned this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Trepidation of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. The initiation of university life can be frightening, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a primary source of your apprehension. On my inaugural day in student housing, right before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve made some incredible friends that I’ve ever had. These connections have evolved into my second family here at Imperial. It all began with small exchanges with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What was the most significant lesson I gleaned? Embrace that leap of faith early on. If you’re initially hesitant or uncomfortable, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to connect with individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. Staying confident wasn’t always easy, especially amid peers who seemed to have it all together.

What assisted me in overcoming this challenge was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are as well. The critical strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the essential skills to cultivate during your initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support staff genuinely wish for students to succeed and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They keep communication lines open and actively address student concerns throughout the academic year.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the conclusion of the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. Assuming the position of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and it turned out to be a splendid choice. It provided me with the opportunity to establish relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable.

There are countless ways to engage with staff, and I highly suggest taking advantage of these opportunities. Whether through formal positions, office hours, or casual chats, nurturing these relationships can profoundly impact your experience. My greatest takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much help.

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I experienced prior to commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I recognized that I was never genuinely alone.

Most importantly, I learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment. University is a time for growth, and although challenges are inevitable, they also present opportunities to learn and flourish.

If you are about to embark on your own university journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those leaps of faith, embrace the support surrounding you, and trust that you will find your path. Looking back, I wouldn’t exchange this transformative year for anything.
