**Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite introverted, plunging into this new chapter was intimidating. Now that I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant development, hurdles, and lots of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered early on was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you may be feeling similarly. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known, both within my course and throughout the university.
The secret? Taking that first bold step. I began engaging in casual conversations with individuals who, like me, were navigating similar feelings. Before long, I found myself amidst a supportive second family here at Imperial. So, what did I glean from this experience? It’s always worthwhile to push past your comfort zone early on. If you’re not quite ready, don’t stress—there are countless ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’ll inevitably encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexities of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more evident. It’s natural to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying diligently. However, a realization that proved beneficial was understanding that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are facing similar difficulties.
The most vital lesson I internalized in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t hold back from asking for support. Everyone is invested in your success, and reaching out for help is an essential part of navigating university life.
### The Encouraging Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department is exceptional. They genuinely aim to see students thrive and are cognizant of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication channels open and were always willing to hear our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I embraced the opportunity of becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which was incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the faculty, and I wholeheartedly recommend utilizing these chances. My primary takeaway? Don’t hesitate to access the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that the anxiety I felt before and during my university experience was frequently unwarranted. A multitude of support systems exists, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly isolated. I’ve discovered how to strike a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines while savoring university life, and I’ve experienced growth both academically and personally in ways I had not anticipated.
