**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this fresh chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyable moments, I can assert it’s been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, you might share this concern as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, feeling too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can enthusiastically say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have become my second family while at Imperial.
What was the key? It all began with light conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking a bold step early on is vital. If you’re not ready initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and increased complexity of the coursework was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe peers studying and thriving.
What assisted me through this was understanding that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s highly likely that others are having similar difficulties. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This is undoubtedly one of the most crucial lessons I gained during my first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
The faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely want students to flourish and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us and addressed our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support resources available until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the start of the academic year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and I strongly recommend seizing these opportunities. My major takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support systems that are accessible to you—you can never have excessive assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during it—was frequently unwarranted. The extensive range of support available, from staff to fellow students, made a staggering difference. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to balance stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been a pathway of self-discovery, growth, and connection. For anyone gearing up for university, my suggestion is clear: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do it!
